An a-peel-ing film!

This past weekend, I led a team in the 2013 Boston 48 Hour Film Project and we successfully completed our film on time! Our film is entitled “Bananaman” and this was our third year participating in the 48 Hour Film Project.

For those of you not familiar with the 48HFP, it’s an international filmmaking competition that puts your filmmaking skills (and sanity) to the test as you are challenged to make a film in less than 48 hours. Teams arrive at the kickoff meeting on Friday night and each team pulls a genre out of a hat. This year our team drew “superhero” for our genre. After everyone has pulled their genres, the team leaders anxiously wait for the clock to hit seven when the required elements are announced. Every city receives a character, prop & line of dialogue that each team must also include in their film. The criteria we had to include were: character – Bonnie or Brian Higgins, inventor; prop – a net; line of dialogue – “Believe me, it’s worth it.”

I worked as producer and editor on this film as well as other random jobs as they came up. The 48HFP can be a lot of fun with such a small crew & time constraints because everyone ends up shuffling jobs around in order to get the film done. People that have never been involved in a production before are helping to move equipment around, hold light reflectors or help design costumes. In the course of about 20 minutes, you can go from being on camera to logging footage to production designer & “B Team” camera operator.

Coming into this weekend, I had worked with less than half of our crew members before and it was quite the experience as we all figured things out together. Having a few experienced 48HFP members helped form some strategies for the weekend and combined with the excited newcomers I think we’ve come up with our best 48HFP film to date! It was an absolute joy working with everyone on our crew and I’m already counting down until we can do our next one!
