Skinny Love

In October 2014, the Emerson College Treble Makers performed on WERS as part of Live Music Week. I was engineering the live session, and their cover of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love” struck a chord &emdash; pun intended. Shortly thereafter, I approached the group asking if they would be interested in doing a studio version of their arrangement. They had never recorded anything professionally and I had always wanted to produce an a cappella track. It was a perfect match.

We brought the group into the studio for a full day of tracking in November. We had microphones in different rooms in order to isolate each singer even while we recorded multiple at once. After the full day of tracking and many more hours of editing, the tracks were sent off to my friend Shao Jean Sim for her to work her magic on the tuning. Once everything was edited and tuned, I polished off the mix and sent it off to the Treble Makers.

While I was working on the audio, the group put together a music video along with several other Emerson students. They premiered the video at their spring show on campus. The Berkeley Beacon covered the event and detailed the group’s process in creating the video.

I hope you enjoy the video!
